I finally got the proof copy of Open Wound, and it looks gorgeous! I’m so excited for it to be out in the world, so much work went into this little beast of a book. Rue Sparks, who worked with my idea for the cover, did such an amazing job nailing the vibes, and Shimaira, who helped me with formatting, made the book look amazing.
Here’s a little peek:

Thanks for reading this far. Here’s an excerpt from Open Wound to whet your appetite…
I’d lost track of the days I spent in that house, but I finally ventured outside again. The withdrawal symptoms were bearable for the time being, and I went to the town. I noticed a strange rumbling coming from the atmosphere that seemed near yet far away. It sounded like a beast, and it brought to mind the eldritch horrors I’d often read about while back at home.
I spun in all directions to find the source, and I eventually looked up toward the heavens. The clouds still hadn’t moved and all was still. A whisper of a breeze could be heard but not felt, and everything remained as if frozen in time. I’d believe that if it weren’t for the running water and the ticking clocks.
I rounded the corner of the skate shop, and I felt like a fool for missing it. It was enormous.
In the near distance floating above a gathering of pine trees was a gigantic eye. Its iris was red with a blue pupil in the middle, and around it drifted a dark miasma where tendrils swayed. It uttered another ethereal, guttural groan, and the whispering breeze had been the sound of its tendrils squirming in midair.
It must have noticed me, for its tendrils stopped swaying and it turned to look in my direction. Something ancient stared back and a distinct sense of a silent accusation overwhelmed me. I froze on the spot and kept my distance, but it didn’t seem that the entity was capable of moving quickly. Its tendrils simply went back to swaying to and fro.
I remembered to breathe and squeezed a hand over my chest as my heart skipped a beat. I finally ventured to the edge of the forest, and below the canopy existed a strange and still fog that emanated the smell of a long-deceased corpse.
Like everything else in that strange world, the being was a complete mystery to me, but there was a grander purpose surrounding its presence. The only other thing alive, it hovered over all as a titan to look over the vast land of a time long gone, and it no longer reacted to my presence. It probably didn’t expect to see another living thing, if I was among the living anymore.
I stumbled back as the tendrils twisted to coax something toward them, and its gaze welcomed clouds that drifted in its direction. They were sucked into the black hole that was the entity’s pupil, and the skies shifted as the dimmed sun moved closer to the eye’s oblivion. Was its sole purpose to consume everything? Unlike the master of the bleak void before, this thing wasn’t to be seen by those who should have already passed through. It cleaned up the remnants of time as all else moved on.
It looks so good and I can't wait for your book to go out into the world and devour--I mean, be devoured by readers everywhere 😁
